Crawling through the woods, Arjanâs heart thumped in his chest. He knew Labyrinth was in trouble, feeling a Current that something was wrong. At the same time, he knew the Sirens were circling the area in search of him. As long as they didnât have the Human Siren, all was well. But he didnât doubt that in time, Onessia would give out the location of Labyrinth.
He got to his feet, spinning around at hearing the crunching of the leaves on the ground.
âArjan,â a voice whispered.
He gasped, facing the Siren behind him. Phyrgelis, his childhood friend⦠Arjan couldnât refrain from smiling. His buddy was exactly the same as he last saw him. Phyrgelis had always been the larger of the two. Ithica told him it was because he wasnât sick like Arjan was. His long, brown hair was pulled back as it often was, and his black armor played off of his brown wings. âYour mother is aching without you. How do you not care?â he asked, his brown eyes large, pleading.
Arjan stepped back slowly, shaking his head. âPhyrgelisâ¦my good friend,â he murmured, voice pained. âYou know how treacherous it was for me there. You know what they do to me. How they treat me.â
âAfter eleven years, we find out that you are not dead. You have only forsaken us by playing an evil trick,â Phyrgelis reprimanded.
âI had good reason to,â Arjan replied. As his friend took a step closer, he took one back. âPlease,â he begged. âPlease do not make me go back thereâ¦. They torture me. They torture my mind with lies and tricks. You know how I suffered living there. I cannot go back.â
âYour Highness, please,â Phyrgelis sighed.
Arjanâs head lifted heavenward, hearing Oberon and Melodiam nearby. He returned his teary gaze to Phyrgelis, saying nothing.
Phyrgelis breathed a sigh, slouching his shoulders as if disappointed in himself. âGo,â he finally told him. âHurry. Now. Before I change my mind.â
âThank you.â Arjan released the breath he had been holding. âThank you!â He ran in the other direction, and Phyrgelis took to the sky to reconvene with the other Warrior Sirens.
